We are a Reading School

At Earlston Primary and Nursery, we are incredibly proud to have achieved the Gold Reading School Award, recognising our school’s deep commitment to fostering a love of reading across our entire community.

The Reading Schools accreditation programme, led by the Scottish Book Trust, celebrates schools where reading for pleasure is at the heart of learning, wellbeing, and creativity. Achieving Gold reflects how fully reading is embedded in our culture — it shapes our classrooms, enriches our relationships, and inspires our learners every day.

Our success in gaining this award has been driven by one of our Pupil Action Groups, who worked with enthusiasm and determination to make reading a visible and valued part of school life. They have been inspired and supported by our very own author and teacher, Mrs Fox, whose passion for storytelling and literacy has encouraged both staff and pupils to see reading as a joyful, shared experience.

We are also fortunate to have the public library located within our school building, providing children and families with daily access to a rich variety of books and resources. This unique partnership helps strengthen our reading culture and builds a lasting connection between home, school, and the wider community.

At Earlston, reading is much more than a skill — it’s a source of inspiration, imagination, and connection. Our Gold Reading School Award celebrates the teamwork, creativity, and enthusiasm that make reading a central part of who we are.
