Home Learning Policy and Guidance
A key partnership is the one we have with the parents and carers of our pupils. We take every opportunity to encourage parents and carers to be involved in their children’s education in as many different ways as possible, and supporting your child with home learning is a vital part of this collaboration.
Our Approach to Home Learning
Across all stages of our school, we offer ‘home learning opportunities’ rather than setting rigid ‘homework tasks’ that must be completed and returned by a strict date.
Each class teacher provides home learning opportunities on a weekly basis. These may include one or more of the following:
Class teachers carefully consider all home learning tasks to ensure children feel confident and supported rather than overwhelmed or confused.
Where to find our Home Learning Opportunities:
Flexibility & Well-Being
Please be mindful that these activities are optional opportunities to support your child's learning journey at school. Ultimately, we hope families see the benefit of reinforcing classroom learning together.
However, we recognise that family life is busy. If there are times when you or your child are unable to engage in these activities, please do not feel pressured to complete them. Your child’s well-being and positive attitude toward learning always come first.

Where to find our Home Learning Opportunities:
- Physical Homework Folder: Children are provided with an Earlston Primary School Homework Folder when they start P1. This will stay with your child throughout their time at Primary School, providing a safe place for them to store any home learning tasks.
- Online Showbie Folders: Within your child's Showbie account you will find folders detailing home learning opportunities for each week.
- Curriculum Overviews: Our termly Curriculum Overviews which are sent home to parents and carers will detail the learning which is taking place in class, as well as opportunities to further strengthen these learning opportunities at home.
