Our Approaches to Home Learning

At Earlston Primary, we recognise that children achieve their very best when schools and families work together. Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting learning beyond the classroom, and we greatly value this partnership.

We also understand the importance of balance. While academic learning matters, it is equally important that children have time to take part in clubs, sports, family activities, social events, and hobbies that support their wider Health and Wellbeing. Our approach aims to complement family life, not compete with it.

Home Learning Opportunities

Rather than setting traditional homework that must be completed and handed in by a specific date, we promote Home Learning Opportunities. These are designed to give children and families flexibility, offering a range of optional tasks that reinforce and extend class learning. Children can access learning materials that match the skills they have been practising in school, allowing them to build confidence at their own pace.

Reading remains a key focus across our school, and children will regularly bring home a reading book. We strongly encourage short, frequent reading practise at home, as this has a significant impact on fluency, comprehension, and enjoyment.

Each term, we share Curriculum Overviews with parents and carers. These outline the key learning taking place in class, along with suggested activities and ideas that can be explored at home. These are optional and are designed to open up conversations, spark curiosity, and help families feel connected to their child’s learning journey.

How Families can help:

Families can make a big difference in small, everyday ways. You can support your child’s learning by:
  • Making time to read together and talking about stories, characters, and new words
  • Encouraging curiosity—ask questions, share interests, and chat about what they are learning in school
  • Providing a calm space for practice when your child chooses to take part in a Home Learning Opportunity
  • Celebrating effort as well as achievement
  • Keeping a healthy balance between learning, play, hobbies, rest, and family time

Our aim is to make home learning meaningful, manageable, and enjoyable—building strong learning habits while giving children time to thrive both in and out of school.
